thank you for aouir answer. I'm sorry for my late reply but your answer did not show up here in my Notes client (and not in the web) for several days where I've checked for answers.
I was abroad for some days then and now I tried to catch up with the issue and found your answer as of the same day I've posted my question - I'm a bit puzzled on that.

Anyway I followed your advice and at least I can understand now why there is no problem for my user mailboxes: there is no MIME conversion done for those messages. In cases where I receive the error I can see the following in the log:
